Nicholas “Nick” Karthas dedicated 34 years to serving our country across three major wars. A proud Navy veteran, he began his service during WWII at just 17 years old and continued through Korea, Vietnam, and later as a Navy recruiter.
Nick’s remarkable journey spanned the decks of Destroyer Escorts and aircraft carriers, including the USS Huse, USS Marsh, and the USS Franklin D. Roosevelt. His ship was credited with sinking five German submarines during WWII—a reflection of the bravery and resolve he carried throughout his service.
He earned numerous commendations including the WWII Victory Medal, European-African Medal with three bronze stars, Korean War Medal, and Vietnam Service Medal. But beyond medals, Nick was known for his humility, faith, and commitment to his family.
This Memorial Day, we honor Chief Petty Officer Nicholas Karthas—whose steady hand, quiet strength, and enduring love of country leaves a legacy we will never forget.
